What should be included in our daily yoga practice?

This is one of the frequently asked questions in the class from my yoga students and other yoga enthusiasts.

Most of the yoga practitioners are interested in doing yoga postures or asanas which constitute the third limb of Ashtanga yoga.  Ironically, Sage Pathanjali, the author of Yoga Sutras has not mentioned about physical exercise postures i.e. cultural yogasanas that we are generally practicing, like sun salutation, triangle postures, sarvangasana, sirshasana and so on.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga practice release body tension and calm the nervous system and emotions. The practice of balancing yoga postures builds concentration. Yoga tones every part of the body, including the internal organs. Yoga increases the flexibility and lengthening the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Types of yoga

  • Karma Yoga: The yoga of action or work
  • Bhakti Yoga: The yoga of Devotion or spirituality
  • Jnana Yoga: The yoga of Knowledge
  • Raja Yoga: Yoga of Mind and Meditation
  • Kundalini Yoga: Release of Spiritual Energy
  • Hatha Yoga:The yoga for Gaining Physical Strength
  • Tantra Yoga: is the highest form of transforming vital energy for the benefit of awakening supreme consciousness

Locked lotus [Baddha-Padmasana]

Sit in Padmasana with legs crossed. The heels should touch the lower part of the abdomen. Swing the right arm behind the back of the shoulder and bring the hand near the left hip. Catch the left big toe. Similarly, swing the left arm and hold the right big toe.
